It’s very exclusive and is only open on weekends or when cruise ships are in port all throughout the year except April to August. Before you wander to the eastern side of the island, check out the west. From lush botanical gardens and rolling mountain background to pristine white sand beaches, Frederiksted has it all. The pier has a tourism desk, bathrooms and from there downtown, Frederiksted is just a walking distance.

Shop Local

Driving is on the left side of the road, which might be unusual for some visitors. Shopping in St. Croix is a little simpler than the bigger name shops on St. Thomas. There are duty-free stores selling local rum and souvenirs in Frederiksted by the cruise port, and more shopping—like boutiques, clothing, and local markets—in the town center. Many shops are closed on Sundays for religious observation. In December, the Crucian Christmas Festival is celebrated in Frederiksted and Christiansted, a month-long tradition complete with costumes, food, and parades for both children and adults.

Historic Frederiksted Walking Tours

On Rainbow Beach at West End Water Sports, you can rent floats, kayaks, stand up paddle boards and Jet Skis to enjoy a fun day on the water. A group of knowledgeable voluntary guides brings the history to life through musical stories, traditional food making technics and oral narration of the island’s history. For a mere charge of $10, this is a must visit and a great way to learn island history. You and your kids will also enjoy the candy and food offered by local women at the place. Here is where you want to go, to learn the islands past ways. This museum doesn’t only feature great artifacts and the most well-kept sugar plantation ruins but also has a living museum.

Night Caribbean & Perfect DayDetails

Virgin Island’s biggest island, but it remains a little under the radar. Tourists tend to flock to the more famous St. Thomas, but there’s plenty to see and do in St. Croix for all types of travelers on a Caribbean cruise. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines.

Behavior that is loud and boisterous is often times frowned upon. A smile and a greeting such as ‘good evening’ will surely help you fit in. The Virgin Islands Port Authority issues a copy of the Cruise Ship Schedule prior to each sailing season.

Visit St. George Botanical Gardens where nature and history blend well to create a perfect 2-3hr getaway while in St. Croix. The 16-acre botanical garden 4miles northeast of Frederiksted is a must visit. It bears history dating back to 100AD when the original inhabitants of the island first set up camp here to farm and practice horticulture. It also offers a variety of paintings and hand-carved mahogany sculptures. Not forgetting unique island spices, clothes, and quirky island souvenir.

It’s a nice place to visit and learn about the intriguing history behind the island that has seen 7 different foreign regimes rule. The hike is, however, more than worth it, rewarding its hikers with scenic landscape. The hiking trail starts at the Carambola, renaissance resort area. It takes a 30-minute cab ride from Frederiksted to get there. Go early in the morning, wear sturdy shoes, carry water, wear sunscreen and go cool off in the pools.

We recommend you book your transportation and tours in advance as many fill up when a cruise ship is in port. Apart from shopping, Frederiksted is rich in historical and cultural sites. Key attractions include the Frederiksted Pier, renowned for its scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities and a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. The iconic Fort Frederik, an 18th-century structure, stands as a testament to the island's colonial past and played a significant role in the history of emancipation on the island. Snorkeling here is bound to leave you with long lasting memories. An additional charm to Buck Island is Turtle Beach at its western point. It features the softest white sands and clearest turquoise blue waters perfect for swimming, floating and playing in. Check out the hard-to-miss yellow brick Fort Christiansvaern in Christiansted for a vivid history lesson— it’s the best preserved Danish-built fort in the Virgin Islands. Whenever we have friends and/or family in town we always try to do a sunset sail. Captain Gabe and Mate Tristan made everyone comfortable and along with a gorgeous sunset kept everyone entertained with music, tunes on the conch shell and good island punch.

This park boasts of the largest mangrove system in the USVI’s. A popular thing to do here is taking a kayak tour of the mangrove by the day and seeing the bioluminescent bay by night. Another point of interest is the Frederiksted Pier, whose underwater inhabitants have become popular draws to the town.

Once known as the garden of the West Indies, St. Croix is dotted with sugar plantation ruins. In its heyday, St. Croix was a wealthy sugar cane manufacturing island with at least 200 sugar cane plantations. Today many lay in ruins and few are still well preserved.

The area surrounding the pier in Frederiksted is landscaped with lush gardens, cozy benches and a shopping area consisting of a range of gazebos. Lovely iron torchlights provide illumination and a period ambience that befits the restored 17th- and 18th-century Danish Creole buildings. The waterfront, too, is landscaped along Strand Street; you can walk along the boardwalk for great views and access to beautiful beaches. Located on the North Shore, about a 30-minute drive from Frederiksted, Cane Bay Beach offers a picturesque setting with clear waters and vibrant marine life, ideal for snorkeling and diving. The beach is lined with bars and restaurants, providing a lively atmosphere for visitors. Horseback riding is also available in this area, offering a one-of-a-kind vacation experience.

Instead, ships dock at the Ann E. Abramson Pier in Frederiksted on the western side of the island. Just off the northeast coast of St. Croix, this small, uninhabited island is famed for its protected coral reef ecosystem. The monument is a popular destination for snorkeling and underwater exploration, showcasing a diverse range of marine life. St. Croix’s cruise port is unique because it isn’t as built up as St. Thomas or other parts of the U.S.

Whether your cruise to the USVI is scheduled to dock in St. Croix or you are planning a visit of your own. If you are interested in history, culture, perfect beaches, lush outdoors and unparalleled underwater adventures then this eastern Caribbean island is the place to be. Virgin Islands, St. Croix is perhaps the least known to cruise passengers, and that's a shame. The island -- home to the United States' easternmost point, Point Udall -- doesn't have the duty-free attractions of St. Thomas or St. Maarten. There's no prefabricated terminal in Frederiksted, a sleepy city on the west end that has been rejuvenated with extensive waterfront landscaping. The fort now serves as a museum and cultural center, offering a historical perspective on the island's struggle for freedom.

The Artists draw their inspiration from the island’s beauty and in return create amazing unique pieces of art. When the Danes landed in the 1700s they also favored this site and built the first sugar cane plantation on the island. Today ruins of the plantation still remain amidst a garden of beautiful flowers, trees, and numerous other vegetation. But some are still accessible to the public such as Estate Mount Washington in the forested west and Rust Op Twist in the north shore.
